Denture Implants

Overdenture

An implant overdenture is a full denture that is supported and secured by multiple dental implants, allowing it to "snap-on" to the implants for increased stability compared to traditional dentures. This provides patients with greater biting force, improved chewing ability, enhanced appearance, and better quality of life. The process involves surgically placing implants into the jawbone, allowing them to integrate, and then creating and attaching the overdenture to them.

How it works

  • Placement: Small dental implant screws are surgically placed into the jawbone.

  • Integration: The implants are given time to integrate with the jawbone, a process that can take a few months.

  • Overdenture creation: While the implants heal, a traditional denture can be worn.

  • Attachment: Once the implants are integrated, a custom overdenture is created and can be "snapped" onto the implants using a variety of attachments, such as Locator® attachments or a bar.

Benefits over traditional dentures

  • Stability: Prevents slipping and irritation, making it easier to eat and speak.

  • Improved bite and chewing: Increases biting force, allowing for a wider variety of foods to be eaten.

  • Preserves bone: The implants help prevent the continued bone loss that occurs with conventional dentures.

  • Comfort: Offers a more natural fit and feel, reducing the chance of mouth sores.

  • Appearance: Can restore a more natural and stable smile.

Things to consider

  • Cost:

Overdentures can have a significant upfront cost, typically ranging from $8,000 to $15,000 per arch, though they are a more affordable option for many compared to other implant solutions.

  • Maintenance:

The attachment components within the overdenture may need replacement over time, adding to the long-term cost.

  • Longevity:

While the implants themselves can last a lifetime with proper care, the overdenture itself may need replacement every 15 to 20 years.

  • Professional consultation:

It's crucial to consult with a dentist to determine if you are a good candidate and to discuss the best treatment plan for your specific needs.

Types of attachments

  • Locator® attachments

A popular and cost-effective option that uses "denture caps" to snap onto the implants.

  • Bar-retained overdentures

A metal bar connects the implants, and the overdenture clips onto this bar for high security.

Hybrid Denture

An All-on-X hybrid denture is a type of dental prosthetic that replaces a full arch of missing teeth by permanently securing a full-arch bridge to a small number of dental implants(the "X" stands for the variable number). It provides a more stable, fixed solution than traditional dentures by using strategically placed implants to support a custom-made, non-removable set of teeth that are screwed into the implants. This hybrid solution is a fixed alternative that looks and feels natural, improving both function and aesthetics for those with severe tooth loss.

How it works

  • Implants:

A dentist places a small number of dental implants into the jawbone to serve as the anchors for the new teeth. The "X" typically refers to 4, 5, or 6 implants, but the exact number depends on the patient's specific needs.

  • Hybrid denture:

A full set of prosthetic teeth is attached to the implants, often using screws. This creates a fixed, permanent, and stable solution that is not removable by the patient.

  • Customization:

The prosthetic is custom-made to match the patient's desired shape, size, and color for a natural look.

  • Placement:

In some cases, a temporary denture can be placed on the same day as the surgery so the patient is not without teeth. The final prosthetic is typically installed after a healing period.

Key benefits

  • Stability:

Provides a more secure and stable fit than traditional removable dentures, eliminating issues with slippage or adhesives.

  • Functionality:

Allows patients to speak, eat, and smile with more confidence, as the teeth are fixed in place.

  • Natural appearance:

Designed to look and feel like natural teeth, providing an aesthetically pleasing result.

  • Permanent solution:

Offers a long-lasting, permanent alternative to traditional dentures.
